Designers are limited by the design of fabrics, and must be at the stage where fabrics exist and are available in order to design a new collection. Some clothing brands will refer to the fabrics provided by several cooperative fabric manufacturers every season, and will not participate in the fabric display, while some fabric wholesalers or agents and personally bring fabric samples to clothing companies for designers to choose.

At present, only a few design companies in the world can have their own fabric design team for their own fabric production, and these few are still large sportswear design companies, such as Nike. Although luxury brands have not been able to produce the fabrics they need, they have begun to develop themselves in the direction of special prints, color modulation, dyes, etc. Here are some of the more important fabric-making steps in a fashion collection.

1. Look at the fabric collection

Most of the fabric presentations are usually held at the same time as the fashion week. Designers can take time out of the runway to select fabrics from their collections for the next season. These textile fairs are co-organised by a group of large fabric suppliers, from which designers can select the ideal fabric samples for the next season's collection.

2. Limited options

The designer will receive some fabric samples from the manufacturer, and the designer will make a limited selection of fabrics from the limited number of fabrics and select the fabrics for the next season's collection. For fabric samples, each apparel design company needs to select 15 cut fabrics from about 20 fabric samples to complete the collection, and the selected 15 fabric samples need to go through feasibility tests to further select the best fabrics before placing an order and starting mass production.

Samples of ready-to-wear from previous seasons are used for testing, and the designer then conducts a final test from these samples, selecting the final fabric from the shape, color and feel.

3. Shoot the fabrics of the clothing series

Once a designer has decided to create a new collection using a certain fabric, they need to place an order with the fabric supplier, and these new collections of ready-to-wear are what the brand wants buyers to display and display in the stores at the upcoming fashion week, usually with 10 to 20 copies of the entire collection. Small design houses, on the other hand, produce ready-to-wear garments without replicas as backups.

For example, a design company decides to make cotton tweed, but they want to include black, gray and pink color points in the collection as the main color system of their collection, but the fabric supplier only provides black, navy blue and red color points, which means that the design company has to make a special small amount of fabric treatment to make the black, gray and pink they want. For example, dyeing a fabric on a small scale of 20 yards costs the same as dyeing 200 yards, so it costs about 2-5 times the price per unit area of fabric.

4. Place an order for garment fabrics

When the designer has finished designing and producing the collection, held a fashion show, started selling the collection in the major specialty stores, and accepted orders from buyers, they need to start counting orders and start ordering mass production of fabrics, usually in quantities of thousands of rolls.
